We injected antibacterial solutions into rabbit pericardium to investigate
tissue injury. Povidone-iodine was the only irrigant found to cause
substantial damage. These data lend experimental support to recent clinical
observations that suggest a causal relation between pericardial irrigation
with povidone-iodine and the later development of constrictive
pericarditis.
