Mechanical occlusion devices are used mainly for the closure of septal defects or patent ductus. There have been some reports of their use for the closure of paravalvular leaks after valve replacement. The potential for leaflet obstruction of a mechanical mitral prosthesis has so far been unrecognized. This is the first report of this potential complication.
Clinical Summary
A 74-year-old woman underwent coronary bypass and aortic valve replacement with a mechanical device 13 years ago. Two years before the current admission, she underwent a second operation to replace her mitral valve because of heart failure secondary to severe mitral incompetence.
