ANNOUNCEMENTS THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THORACIC SURGERYThe American Association for Thoracic Surgery Graham Traveling Fellowship, 1998-1999 The American Association for Thoracic Surgery Evarts A. Graham Memorial Traveling Fellowship was established in 1951 by The American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Administered through the Graham Educational Research Foundation Fellowship grants support study by young cardiothoracic surgeons from outside North America at sites of their choice within North America and include travel between sites. Goals of the program are to broaden overall training and increase international contacts. Each Fellow should plan to have one primary center for his/her activities where he/she should spend from six to nine months. The Fellow should have identified an individual at that center who will act as his/her sponsor and assist in planning the course of study at the host institution and at other institutions. In addition to the primary center, the Fellow is encouraged to plan to spend shorter periods of time at other secondary centers to enhance the Fellowship experience.Awards are made to surgeons of unique promise who have been regarded as having the potential for later international thoracic surgical leadership. Since the inception of the Graham Fellowship, 44 young surgeons from 23 countries have completed the Fellowship.The Fellowship provides a stipend of $40,000, a major portion of which is intended for traveling expenses incurred when visiting other medical centers. The Fellowship also provides two round-trip coach air fares from the recipient's country to his/her primary center. The dates of the beginning and ending of the Fellowship year should be scheduled to coincide with the Annual Meeting of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery in May, 1998. The Fellow will be introduced at this meeting and his/her predecessor will give a report of his/her year's experience to the Association's Membership at the Executive Session. The Fellow will be expected to present a summary of his/her year's experience at the 1999 Annual Meeting, which will take place at the Hilton Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana, April 18-21.The Fellow should become involved predominantly with observation, consultation, teaching, and research at a variety of thoracic surgical training centers during the twelve months. Patient contact will be determined by the sponsoring surgeon and will conform to the regulations and licensing requirements of the state, province, or country in which he/she is studying.A candidate should have completed his/her formal training in general surgery and in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, but he/she should not have reached a senior position. The American Association for Thoracic Surgery Dwight Harken Research Scholarship, 1998-2000 The American Association for Thoracic Surgery announces the Dwight Harken Research Scholarship to provide an opportunity for research, training, and experience for a North American surgeon committed to pursuing an academic career in cardiothoracic surgery. The scholarship will be funded by the Association and administered by the Graham Education and Research Foundation.The research program must be undertaken within the first three years after completion of an approved cardiothoracic residency. Applications for the scholarship may be submitted during the candidate's final year of cardiothoracic residency or during his or her first two years in an academic position. The duration of the scholarship is to be two years.The yearly stipend shall be $35,000 paid to the host institution. In addition, a grant of $5,000 per year shall be made for support of research supplies, travel, and other legitimate academic expenses of the scholar. Applications for the scholarship are available from the Secretary of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery. The application will consist of three components:

  1. The candidate must submit a proposal for the research to be undertaken and a statement of career plans and how the research activity will relate to the candidate's academic career.
  2. The Director of the laboratory in the institution at which the research will be performed shall submit an endorsement of the proposal and indicate the facilities and degree of support available for the candidate's research.
  3. The Chairman of the candidate's department shall submit his or her endorsement of the proposal and indicate the willingness of the institution to provide an academic appointment for the candidate upon completion of the scholarship.
The application and its three components shall be submitted to the Secretary of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery by July 1, 1997. Announcement of the award will be made by the President of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery by December 1, 1996. The Scholarship will begin July 1, 1998. Following completion of the two-year program, the scholar shall submit a written report of his/her research activities to the membership of the Association.Applications for the scholarship are available from:

ANNOUNCING
The American Association for Thoracic Surgery International Traveling Fellowship
The American Association for Thoracic Surgery announces the establishment of the AATS International Traveling Fellowship, an annual award to enhance the opportunity for young North American cardiothoracic surgeons to travel abroad for a year of training. This program is designed to provide exposure in different disciplines to young North American cardiothoracic surgeons within two years of the completion of their formal cardiothoracic surgery training.Annual awards will be made to yong cardiotho-racic surgeon of unique promise who are regarded as having the potential for later international thoracic surgical leadership. The annual award, administered and funded by the AATS Graham Foundation, will include a stipend of $40,000 and round-trip economy airfare from the successful candidate's institution to a selected training site outside North America for the candidate and spouse. Announcement of 1998 Annual Meeting The Seventy-eighth Annual Meeting of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery will be held May 3-6, 1998, in Boston, Massachusetts. Headquarters for the meeting will be the Sheraton Boston Hotel. The meeting of the Association is open to all physicians. House Officers and Fellows will be admitted without payment of a registration fee upon presentation of a letter from their Chief of Service at the time of registration. Nonmember physicians will be required to pay a $250 registration fee. Material for the programAbstracts of all papers proposed for presentation at the 1998 meeting must be received on or before November 3, 1997; otherwise they will not be considered by the Program Committee. The work must not have been presented or reported elsewhere. They should be accompanied by a Transmittal of Abstract Form, which will be available in August 1997 from the Association's office listed above, and will appear in the Journal in the August issue. The abstract must be typed, double-spaced, on one side of one 81/2 by 11 inch sheet, and should accurately and clearly reflect the content of the completed paper. No reference should be made on the abstract to the names or institutions of the authors. Papers submitted for the Forum sessions should be clearly labeled "For Thoracic Surgery Forum" at the top of the sheet. The Forum is primarily for the presentation of current cardiothoracic research in progress, experimentalproblems, anatomic studies, and modified or new surgical techniques.Papers submitted by nonmembers must be accompanied by a letter of sponsorship from a member of the Association. Material for the programScientific papers will be considered from members and nonmembers. Member sponsorship is not necessary. Abstracts of proposed papers must have been received by the Program Chairman on or before February 3, 1997. Each abstract must be 250 words or less, should be typed double-spaced on an 81/2 by 11 inch sheet, and must be accompanied by a Transmittal of Abstract Form.The body of the abstract should accurately describe completed work; contain numerical information about the patients, experimental groups, or results obtained; and discuss the significance or conclusions that are appropriate. Unless specified otherwise, the first named author will receive correspondence, give a ten-minute presentation of the paper, and close the discussion. Successful essayists must deliver the complete manuscript at the time of presentation. The manuscript must be in a form acceptable to The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeryand must not exceed 3000 words without illustrations. The essay length must be reduced appropriately when figures or tables are included.Samson Resident Prize EssayThe Association offers a prize for the best manuscript on a topic of interest to thoracic surgeons in honor of Paul C. Samson, MD. Candidates for the prize must be in a training program in the United States or Canada. The one essayist whose abstract, manuscript, and presentation are judged most outstanding will receive a $2000 cash award following the presentation of all papers in California. The conditions for abstract submission, presentation, and publication as described above will apply. In addition, the Samson Resident Prize Essaybox in the lower left hand corner of the form should be checked. A covering letter from the Chief of Service of the training program indicating the individual's year of training and the proportion of the work performed by the resident must be submitted. The authors of the abstracts chosen for the program will make up the finalists and were notified by March 31, 1997, that they must submit six completed manuscripts for review by the Prize Essay Committee.The Prize Essay Committee will make its selection following the presentation of all papers in California.Application for membershipApplications for membership in the Association must have been received by the Membership Committee Chairman no later than March 3, 1997, to be considered at the following annual meeting. THE AMERICAN BOARD OF THORACIC SURGERYNotices The Part I (written) examination will be held at the Atlanta Airport Hilton and Towers, Atlanta Airport, Atlanta, Georgia, on February 1, 1998. The closing date for registration is August 1, 1997.To be admissible for the Part II (oral) examination a candidate must have successfully completed the Part I (written) examination.A candidate applying for admission to the certifying ex amination must fulfill all the requirements of the Board in force at the time the application is received.Please address all communications to the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, One Rotary Center, Suite 803, Evanston, Illinois 60201.The American Board of Thoracic Surgery began its recertification process in 1984. Diplomates interested in participating in this examination should maintain a documented list of their operations performed during the year prior to application for recertification. This practice review should consist of one year's consecutive major operative experiences. (If more than 100 cases occur in one year, only 100 need to be listed.) For the two years prior to application they should also keep a record of their attendance at approved postgraduate medical education programs. A minimum of 100 hours of approved CME activity is required.In place of a cognitive examination, candidates for recertification will be required to complete both the general thoracic and cardiac portions of the SESATS VI Syllabus (Self-Education/Self Assessment in Thoracic Surgery). It is not necessary for candidates to purchase SESATS VI prior to applying for recertification. The SESATS VI material will be forwarded to candidates after their applications have been accepted.Diplomates whose ten-year certificates will expire in 1999 may begin the recertification process in 1997. Their new certificate will be dated ten years from the time of expiration of their original certificate. Recertification is also open to diplomates with an unlimited certificate and will in no way affect the validity of their original certificate.The deadline for submission of applications is May 1, 1997.
