Dear Reader:
Sixty-seven years ago, Evarts A. Graham founded the Journal of Thoracic Surgery, now the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, as the official publication of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery. It was the first journal in its field and has remained one of the most notable and respected scientific publications in medicine. Nearly 10,000 monthly copies are distributed worldwide and its full text appears on the Internet monthly.
This spring the AATS will welcome three additional official publications: Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Annual, and Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: A Comparative Atlas (formerly Operative Techniques in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery: A Comparative Atlas). Seminars and Operative Techniques are well-established publications of W. B. Saunders Company; they appear quarterly and are edited by James L. Cox. They will complement the Journal by reviewing for the practicing surgeon current concepts in the clinical management of general thoracic, adult cardiac, and pediatric cardiac surgical diseases as well as illustrate different operative techniques by authorities in the field. The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery itself will remain unchanged and continue to be published monthly, communicating the latest basic and clinical information in peer-reviewed manuscripts.
The AATS publications will now span the entire field of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery from the frontiers of molecular biology, gene transfer, and complex interactions between biologic and artificial surfaces to the important arena of how and when to do what for a patient.
Both publishersMosby, Inc., and W. B. Saunders Companyhave agreed to cross-promote these publications. The table of contents and abstracts of the Seminars, Operative Techniques, and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Annual will also go on-line with the CTS Net as official Association publications. The editorial content of all three publications will be the responsibility of the AATS and to that end, Jim Cox, as Editor of both the Seminars and Operative Techniques, will work with John Waldhausen, the Editor of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery, who will remain Editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
We hope to create a well integrated and stimulating series of publications for our readers and continue to welcome your thoughts.
