To the readers:
As Editor, I wrestled with the decision of whether to publish this letter or not. Manufacturers may or may not have valid reasons for designating equipment "for single use." I would like to believe that the deciding factor is not always economics. Nonetheless, the repeated use of disposable products is a practice that I have observed on visits to other institutions and it is a practice that may be quite prevalent. Manufacturers may recommend single usage because of sterility concerns, durability concerns, or issues of reliability. Publishing this letter does not in any way condone the reuse of items designated as "disposable" by the manufacturer. However, if this is a prevailing practice, information regarding potential complications does provide a service to our community.
